3. India conducts first night trial of Agni-II missile

  • India has successfully conducted the first night trial of nuclear-capable intermediate range ballistic missile Agni-II from the Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.
  • The Strategic Forces Command of the Indian Army test-fired the versatile surface-to-surface medium-range nuclear-capable missile from launching complex IV of the Integrated Test Range on Saturday evening, defence sources said.
  • Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the missile has already been inducted into the armed forces.  
  • The 20-metre-long, two-stage ballistic missile has a strike range of 2,000 km. It has a launch weight of 17 tonnes and can carry a payload of 1,000 kg, the sources said.

4. Joint Exercise between Qatar and India (Za’ir-Al-Bahr 2019)

5. ADB, India Sign $91 Million Loan for Comprehensive Water Management in Karnataka

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of India today signed a $91 million loan to modernize the Vijayanagara Channel irrigation systems and prepare river basin management plans in the Krishna river basin that will help improve irrigation water use efficiency and contribute to improving sustainable water security in Karnataka.
  • The signatories to the second project loan for the Karnataka Integrated and Sustainable Water Resources Management Investment Program (IWRM) were Mr. Sameer Kumar Khare, Additional Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance who signed for the Government of India and Mr. Kenichi Yokoyama, Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, who signed for ADB.
  • The investment program, consisting of two project loans, will help Karnataka’s water agencies better draw up and roll out effective river basin management plans. The first project is helping the modernization of the Gondi irrigation system and supporting the state with preparing a new water resources policy and other water governance strengthening activities.
  • Second project loan will continue to strengthen state and basin institutions for IWRM and finance the modernization of Vijayanagara Channels by upgrading headworks and about 442 kilometers of main, distributaries and minor canals

8. National Health Mission Jammu and Kashmir launched BMEWMP programme

  • Darjeeling Tea Association said green and white tea of the hills have been registered as geographical indication (GI) products in the country.
  • These two varieties of Darjeeling tea have been registered under Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 1999, with effect from October 2019, it said.
  • The Tea Board had filed an application in this regard on December 2017, the DTA said.
  • This will “strengthen the protection of the intellectual property rights of the Darjeeling tea”, which is considered as “niche and luxury” products in the country and abroad.
  • Of the total annual production of 8.5 million kilograms of Darjeeling tea, green tea comprises one million kilogram and white tea one lakh kilogram.

10. Pakistan Becomes First Country to Launch New WHO-approved Typhoid Vaccine

  • Pakistan has become the first country in the world to introduce a new typhoid vaccine, as the country grapples with an ongoing outbreak of a drug-resistant strain of the potentially fatal disease.
  • The vaccine, approved by the World Health Organization (WHO), will be used during a two-week immunisation campaign in southern Sindh province.
  • Sindh is where most of Pakistan’s 10,000 cases of typhoid have been documented since 2017.
  • After the two-week campaign, it will be introduced into routine immunisations in Sindh, and in other areas of Pakistan in the coming years
  • In 2017, 63 percent of the typhoid cases documented and 70 percent of the fatalities were children, according to a joint press release from the Pakistani government, WHO and Gavi.
